The word Reiki (pronounced "RAY-KEY") is a Japanese word that means "universal life-force energy."  Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, described the word as "Rei" representing Divine healing energy (spiritual or sacred) and "Ki" representing life-force energy of the universe (the energy of everything, which is usually translated as "universal life energy"). This healing technique, which is thousands of years old, finally had a name!

Mikao Usui was born in Japan in August of 1865. After many professions, he studied Zen, searching for enlightenment. In 1922, after fasting for 21 days on Mount Kurama located in Kyoto, Japan, he attained enlightenment and realized that he had been given the ability to heal. He named his healing ability Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai, established the Gokai 5 Principles, and the Reiki Training Method.

Once attuned in Reiki, universal life-force energy is channeled through the Practitioner to the client. No direct energy comes from the Practitioner. Reiki flows through the palms and the effects are immediate. The Practitioner harnesses the natural energies that are in the surrounding area and allows that love and light to flow through them into the recipient, whether human or animal. The session works in balancing the energy Chakra system in the human or animal.

Reiki can be practiced directly or at a distance - a few feet or countries away through distance healing. When working with an animal, they may or may not come to you immediately, but when they realize the benefit of the energy healing, they most likely will come closer.
